Chapter Twelve

Two days had passed since Hendrix left Jeffery at the Marcus’s and caught flight home to Alaska. Marcus’s pack hadn’t been able to tell them much about the drone other than it was high grade, possibly military build, but not up to the standard of the ones from Packwood Robotics. A flight delay had cost him some time but home was less than an hour away. With another burner phone in hand he tried texting Gracie to let her know he was almost home. He needed, no he wanted to talk to her again. He missed her. Even his wolf missed her. In his forty-six years he had never met a female his wolf wanted to keep.

But the messages were not getting answered. He was concerned about her. He should have called her or driven by her place on the way out. To let her know what happened. He hated leaving her even if he knew he couldn’t be with her. At least he had told her he was going home. She had never gone more than a few hours without answering him. He needed to get Marcus, no, that wouldn’t work. He needed to get someone to check in on her and Halo. They had another week before they had to be back on mission. Another week of him not worrying about her safety. Like he didn’t worry about her even when she wasn’t on a mission.

He thought back to the first time he had seen her. He and Kelvin had gotten a call. A team from another organization was down and they didn’t have the fire power in place to get them out. When he and Kelvin had arrived the sound of gunfire was loud in the evening air. Smoke was bellowing from a warehouse where the team had taken refuge from the shooting. They had gone in low and hard, coming in behind the gang holding the other team inside the burning building. The gang hadn’t been expecting to be taken from behind and seven of them were dead before they knew what hit them. He had taken a bullet through his right thigh and multiple shots to the chest, protected by his armored vest, getting to the two inside. He had carried an unconscious Gracie over his shoulder with Halo limping beside him while Kelvin had covered their retreat.

When they got free of the smoke and gunfire and he could get a good look at the woman he carried he was surprised to find she was the other half of the team he was rescuing and not some innocent who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. She had come to for a brief moment and stared at him with unfocused eyes. Her words stayed with him for the next two years until he saw her again.

Mmm, I love chocolate.

Then her head had lolled to the side and she was out again. He and Kelvin had gotten the two out of the area and to a safe house where some of their people picked them up and took them for medical care.
